SCENES
is an acronym for SCOUTING CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE FOR NATURE
AND THE ENVIRONMENT and an international network of locations
is being set up to promote the program. The idea is to have a
number of such centres in various parts of the Scouting world
to strengthen the three fundamental roles of Nature and Environment
as follows:
SCENES are places where
individual Scouts, Scout units and adult Scout Leaders from different
parts of the world can discover the rich opportunities offered
by nature and the environment . It is the intent to make Scouting
more educational, more fun, more attractive and more relevant
to young people, Scouts and non-Scouts, today. Operated and managed
according to the highest environmental standards, they will serve
as demonstration sites, providing "hands-on" environmental
education opportunities for Scouts.
Whenever possible, the SCENES will be linked together by READY,
which is a computer-based communications network made available
by the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) to all
Scouts worldwide.
SCENES is intended for National Scout Associations in all parts
of the world. The concept of excellence must be interpreted in
terms of national resources.
The SCENES project is also relevant for educators, politicians,
business people, public relations experts and the media, other
environmental organizations and the public at large, as an example
of the programs offered to young people by the worlds leading
youth movement, Scouting.
SCENES USE OF READY NETWORK
- THE SCOUTING INTERNET
READY enables Scouts round the world to communicate with one
another and one main emphasis is on NATURE & THE ENVIRONMENT
and electronically connecting the SCENES Centres. The World Wide
Web through the Internet has the WWW address: http://www.scout.org/ready/.
There may be a special SCENES address in due course.
The ability of SCENES Centres to communicate with one another
in this way is a vital component of the program as ideas and event
dates may be interchanged and visits organised with maximum speed.
Such communications between SCENES Centres may be readily copied
to the relevant controlling bodies for information and action.
EPRAPAH was chosen as the first SCENES Centre for Australia because of its unique dedication, since 1973, exclusively to environmental conservation training within Scouting, not only in Queensland but in Australia and in World Scouting, also. At "Eprapah", there is an ideal natural training environment with a variety of ecosystems, ranging from saltwater mangroves to freshwater paperbarked tea tree lagoons, dry eucalypt forest to lowland rainforest remnants. There is a wealth of bird life (over 120 species), other animals such as koalas, wallabies, possums, bandicoots, echidnas, platypus and many insect and other invertebrate species. Environmental education programs have been running each year since 1973 for all ages within Scouting and for students
